Beltaine

Beltaine es una banda hardcore de los años noventa. Se caracteriza por tener ciertos matices de música metal (lo suficiente como para no ser encasillada como banda metalera). Tuvo un período de vigencia de cinco años (1993 - 1998). Lanzamientos: un Cassette (demo, 1993, self-released), Rototillthesky (7", 1994, Atomic Action), Misguised (CD EP, 1996, Atomic Action) y Crowning The Caged Kid (CD, 1997, Atomic Action).

In the summer of 1993, James Quigley, along with friends Way O'Malley and Henry Evans began creating music together. Through word of mouth, they found drummer Sean Gilchrist and guitarist Paul Vieira who had been playing together for years. Practicing for hours in a small barn out in Charlestown, Rhode Island the five members wrote songs quickly and easily. In just a few months they were recording their four song cassette demo at Sampson Studios in Tiverton, RI with engineer Keith Souza (now owner of Machines With Magnets in Pawtucket, RI). Numerous local shows followed. The band recorded more songs for a 3 song vinyl EP that eventually came out on Watermark records, though you would be hard pressed to actually find any anywhere! Later in '94 after a show at Club Babyhead, Henry was asked to leave due to "musical differences" and the band drafted in Shawn St. Martin who, despite playing some guitar, had never played bass before. More practicing and writing of songs followed with a recording for a full length album/demo for Columbia Records. Unsatisfied with the end result, the band decided not to release it and resumed recording other songs at Sampson. A 2 song vinyl EP and five song cassette were released on the Atomic Action label from Middletown, RI. Way decided to leave Beltaine in the early summer of '96. Deciding to continue as a four piece, the band sounded more focused and powerful and went on to record their full length cd for Atomic Action, titled Crowning The Caged Kid. In the next year waiting for the cd's release, Beltaine would play some incredible live shows with bands such as Jawbox, Bluetip, the Warmers, Kerosene 454 and others. Drummer Sean Gilchrist did a short stint drumming for Dischord recording artists Bluetip on their Feb/March '97 tour. Sean left Beltaine in November '97 and now plays in the studio/live for songwriter Leah Carlson. The remaining members found a new drummer and continued on for over a year as Woken By Wire, releasing an excellent 10" EP on Corleone Records. Guitarist Paul Vieira now plays in The Chinese Stars. Beltaine, from Rhode Island formed in ‘93 and disbanded in ‘98. They played melodic indie/hardcore/rock influenced by bands such as Jawbox, Fugazi, Sunny Day real Estate and others. I found this site after doing a search today. Once in awhile I'll type in the ol' bands name and see what comes up for the hell of it. Sometimes I think we were pretty underrated, especially when you see the bands that are around now. We had a four song casette demo released before the Watermark 7" and another cassette "sampler" before the cd came out (with 2 unreleased songs). In '95 Beltaine recorded an LP for Watermark (it was also a demo for Columbia) but was never released. I stopped playing with the band in October '97 and the guys got another drummer and former Woken By Wire. I thought the 10" was really good. Paul (my best friend since age 14) now plays guitar for The Chinese Stars who are pretty popular. I sometimes play live with my friend Leah Carlson and have played on two cd's of hers (recorded by Beltaine's old engineer Keith Souza). James does art, which is really incredible stuff. Pohgoh

Pohgoh es una banda de hardcore emotivo de Tampa, Florida, Estados Unidos. Tuvo vigencia entre los años 1994 y 1998. Sin perjuicio de haber sufrido alteraciones en su formación, ha mantenido la línea de las voces femeninas. En un comienzo (año 94'), la banda se forma con la vocalista Kobi Finley (94'-95'), el guitarrista Matt Slate y Brad Richardson al bajo. Luego, en primavera se les une a la batería, Keith Ulrey. En el año 1995, por razones personales de la vocalista, se retira de la banda en Noviembre de 1995, y es reemplazada por Susie Richardson en Enero del siguiente año. Finalmente, el 21 de Febrero de 1998, la banda se disuelve. En Octubre del año 2001 a Susie le diagnostican esclerosis múltiple, ella y los ex-miembros de Pohgoh te invitan a visitar la NMSS. El 25 de Diciembre de 2005, Pohgoh se reune nuevamente y por una sola noche para tocar junto con otras bandas con un fin benéfico para con la NMSS.

Pulling influences from the rock of Superchunk and Versus, the pop of Velocity Girl and the vocal beauty of Ida, Pohgoh remains, to this day, the quintessential female-fronted indie-rock band from “Emo’s” hey-day.

February 1994, Kobi, Matt and Brad form Pohgoh, with Keith joining on drums later in the Spring. They’re young, they’re having fun, they do two tours of the Eastern U.S. and release 3 records (all singles). Each set contains great hooks, lots of dancing and plenty of show ending noise. In November 1995, Kobi decides to leave for personal reasons.

January 1996, the boys recruit Susie, from Tampa’s Stitch. They’re still young, they’re still having fun, and they do one six week tour of the Eastern U.S., release 2 singles (one w/ our friends, Braid!), a full length and a song on Volume 1 of the “Emo Diaries” series. Each set contains lots of guitar, more great hooks, and still plenty of show ending noise.

“All Along” is a 19 song discography containing every song ever released by the band during their 4 year career (1994-1998). Completely Re-Mastered, this disc includes Friend X from Volume 1 of the popular “Emo Diaries” series, the entire “In Memory of Bab” full length, Goodnight, Sweetheart from their split 7” with Braid, early rare releases featuring original vocalist Kobi and more!

On December 25, 2005, Pohgoh reunited for a one-night-only performance (along with other long-defunct Tampa greats Tomorrow, My Own America and Scrog) raising money to benefit the local chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

After quite a wait, the album is out. Of course, as these things go, Pohgoh have now been broken up for about a year or so, but that doesn't stop the album from being amazing and wonderful. Fantastic melodies grace indie/emo pop with strong, sweet, memorable female vocals. Ten great songs -- the kind that give you chills -- that are filled with subtly catchy guitar interplay, honest emotions, great hooks, and a nostalgic aire of melancholy.

Pohgoh stood out as one of Florida's best bands, and this shows exactly why. They will be missed, but at least we have this. Highly recommended. Outback Entertainment Group, P.O. Box 780132, Orlando, FL 32828

Copper fue una banda de hardcore emotivo que tuvo lugar en los años 90's. Lanzaron un homónimo (Freckle/Tuesday's Child) de 7" en el año 1995 (1994?), y un disco de larga duración "Drag Queen", dos años después. Luego de la separación de la banda, sus miembros se fueron a otros grupos: Meaghan Ball, la vocalista, partió a Idle Hands; Garret Klahn, bajista, se fue a Texas Is The Reason; Tim Turcott, el baterista, participó en varios proyectos, como: The Kite Eating Tree, Gathering Ground, Sonic Boom Project, and The Failures' Union y The Exit Strategy; Sam Falbo igualmente partió a The Kite Eating Tree; de Joe Luca no he podido seguir el rastro.

Copper was an emo or emocore band based in Buffalo, NY in the mid-1990s. They released a self-titled 7-inch in 1994 before releasing a full-length album, Drag Queen, in 1994. Upon their break-up, Klahn joined Texas Is the Reason while Ball moved to California to form Idle Hands, who were signed to Trustkill Records.
