Los Jaivas + Illapu + Los Tres - "Todos Juntos" (Live)

Los Jaivas - Improvisation

Los Jaivas (High Bass)
This band from Chile is one of the most interesting blends of folk and symphonic rock. The band featured Claudio Parra, Gabriel Parra, Gato Alquinta, Eduardo Parra and Mario Mutis (this line-up is from the LP "Cancion Del Sur"), they are playing many instruments including the ethnic tutruka, charanjo, tarka, tumbadore, bongo and maracas. In ’73 the legal government was overthrown very bloody by a new, ‘CIA sponsored’ militarian dictatorship and Los JAIVAS had to flight. They first went to Argentina and then to France. In the Seventies en Eighties Los JAIVAS made a serie of LP’s, recorded in all aforementioned countries. They gradually incorporated more progressive elements into their rock and folk based sound. Eventually Los JAIVAS developped a very unique sound that is hard to compare with known progrock bands. Perhaps you could say “Los Incas meet Mike OLDFIELD”? On their own site I read that Los JAIVAS released the live-CD "Los Jaivas: en vivo Chile" ’88 and in ’97 they made a record with many friends (like the band Congreso) entitled "Trilogia: El Reencuentro".

In general the album "Cancion Del Sur" from ’77 is considered as a great effort. It sounds very progressive (native South-American instruments and flute along electric guitar and synthesizers) but I prefer the more mature and symphonic album "Alturas de Machu Picchu" from ’81, featuring Nobel prize winning poet Pablo Neruda, responsible for the lyrics. Highlight is "La Poderosa Muerte", a melodic and harmonic composition (around 12 minutes) that starts with the typical sound of the panflute and melancholic piano notes, very beautiful and moving, followed by emotional Spanish vocals. The build up is magnificent with propulsive drums and sparkling piano play, soon accompanied by a fat sounding synthesizer and fiery electric guitar. The dramatic atmosphere is emphasized by pathetic vocal harmonies. The moods keep on shifting with lots of (ethnic) instruments, a very emotional experience and a fine proove that progrock has emotion! (Erik Neuteboom)

Charles Bukowski - 90 minutes in hell

VA Big Scary Monsters: 50 Not Out: Celebrating a half-century of releases.

Completely against the run of play, Big Scary Monsters Records have made it to 50 releases! The half-century came as a bit of a shock to everyone but we prefer to think of it as one in the eye for the music industry Grim Reaper, rather than blind faith and an outstayed welcome from this little independent label. "...As we approached the big five-oh we needed to mark the occasion, and it seemed only right that it be with something a little out of the norm. 50 Not Out is a compilation CD made up of 50 MP3s (are you spotting the numeric pattern yet?) from past, present and future associates of the label - including a couple you might not realise are family just yet - along with a whole heap of our favourite others. It's like a big, happy Christmas gathering... In April... On a CD... Which won't play in your stereo.

"Here's to fifty more!"

Library Tapes - A Summer Beneath The Trees (2008)

On 2007's Höstluft, the Swedish musician David Wenngren (a.k.a. Library Tapes) used ghostly pianos and sparse field recordings to create what sounded like Erik Satie compositions on dirty vinyl. Austere piano etudes either floated unadorned or hid inside a haze of scratchy ambiance. As if recognizing that he couldn't push this extreme minimalism much further (the next step would have been silence, and John Cage beat him to that by more than 50 years), Wenngren shifted into a heftier mode with last year's Sketches EP, where Danny Norbury added cello accents to the emboldened piano themes. Of course, "hefty" is relative: Like most of Wenngren's music, Fragment was stark, allowing for little interference between the listener and the limpid melodies.

A Summer Beneath the Trees is still pretty ascetic, but by Wenngren's usual standards, it's practically Wagner. A lot of the credit for this newfound mass is due to Peter Broderick (who also played on the superlative Fragment EP), a young musician from Portland who worked as a session man with M. Ward, Zooey Deschanel, and others, before moving to Copenhagen to join Efterklang. Here, Broderick complements Wenngren's piano with a wide variety of accompaniment: violin, guitar, accordion, trumpet, celesta, viola, and banjo. Höstluft and Fragment were almost accidental music-- like walking by a house and catching a couple minutes of someone picking out a melody on a beat-up old upright inside. This is the fullest, most finished-sounding Library Tapes project since it was an official duo (with Per Jardsell), and may suit listeners who need more than a few endlessly revolving piano notes better than recent offerings. For fans of Max Richter, Tim Hecker, and Eluvium, A Summer Beneath the Tress is a can't-miss album.

It is also, by and large, an exceptionally melancholy album that never slips into outright pathos. Its bucolic title is belied by the music's wintry strains. "The Sound of Emptiness" parts one and two are slow, shrieking dirges; landscapes of nothing but wind and rocks. "Pieces of Us Were Left on the Tracks..." features one of Wenngren's typical, glittering piano themes, buttressed by mournful strings and contrapuntal guitar. These tracks and others like them convey a strong presentiment or memory of loss. More importantly, they serve as foils for the record's handful of triumphant moments, and render them more affecting by contrast. One exemplary track, "Above the Flood", begins with heartbroken piano, but lights up unexpectedly with jaunty, staccato strings, and ends with positively joyful flourishes. And on "The Modest Triumph", the strings take the lead for a sweeping theme that sounds like elation incarnate. As such, it's neither a stereotypically sad record nor a happy one-- it's just human, highlighting emotional extremes to imply the whole range between them. (Pitchforkmedia).

Merzbow / Richard Pinhas - Keio Line (2008)

Double CD version of Keio Line; the complete recording of an incredible collaboration that sweeps across the generations of electronic music. Richard Pinhas is internationally recognized as one of France's major experimental musicians: the "father" of French electronic music. He was the founder of seminal space-rock band Heldon, a band whose violent fusion of electronics and guitar in the '70s rivalled the German electronic school. As a guitar player, he has been compared to Robert Fripp. Cited as an influence by many electronic musicians, Pinhas has helped to define the space music genre. Since founding Heldon in 1974, Pinhas has released over 15 albums, had involvement in dozens more and shaped the way we listen to music today. Masami Akita aka Merzbow is the forerunner of Japanese electronic music, and for the last 20 years plus, has been at the top of his game ploughing more and more extreme sonic territories.

Anathallo - Canopy Glow (2008)

So how does it sound? Well for me it’s not quite as fun as Floating World was, in exchange for that they seemed to have gotten a lot darker. Don’t worry, they haven’t started to write heavy metal songs, it’s just a lot more darker than what I was expecting. Even with this added element they still kept faithful to theirbest core ingredient, which is to create interesting and life affirming music that often puts Sigur Ros, the masters of that style in my opinion, to shame.

Another remarkable thing about this album is it’s way of sounding completely different every time you listen to it. It’s almost as if it’s evolving right in front of you. This made the act of giving this album a rating out of ten harder with every listen as on first listen it was a 7/10 but now it’s at an 8/10. I’m sure whatever I put below will be retracted/changed at some point anyway so don’t pay too much attention to it!

Personal highlights for me have to be the stupidly beautiful ‘All The First Places’. I’m pretty sure this will be the tear jerking moment for everyone when they see it performed live.

When I found out Anathallo had signed to Anticon I, like many others, was shocked. The relationship just seems a little but weird, not just for Anathallo but for Anticon too. But at the end of the day all that matters is that Anathallo have written another great record and finally with the distribution Anticon has, they might just get the recognition and exposure they deserve.

Old Hearts Club

Six Parts Seven, post Old Hearts Club band.

(no wave, math-rock, emo). Agrupaciones destacadas: Young Pioneers, Assembly Line People Program, Red Monkey, Tunic, y otros. Dentro del disco se encuentra "Hot day in mexico" de Old Hearts Club.

"Self-Titled".
